The Right Protection
Friday, June 24, 2011 at 9:25AM As you are well aware of my love/obsession for the sun, it goes without saying that you need to protect yourself, and especially your children. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the US. 1 in 5 people will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Really, the sun is no joke. It is like a bank, it remembers all the times you have been burned and damaged. You might not see signs of it now but it can hit you at any time at any age.
That is why you need to use proper protection, and not protection that will in turn give you cancer. There are many harmful chemicals in sunscreen that are absorbed through your skin. Why slather it on to protect you from cancer, when it could potentially be giving you cancer? Buy safe, effective, and gentle sunscreen for you and especially your babes. I know there are lots of spray kinds on the market, I love the convenance but they are so nasty. Just think before you pick it up, that you are technically having your children inhale toxic chemicals.
The Environmental Working Group just released their annual list of safe and effective sunscreens. They tested 500 sunscreens on the market and only 8% were considered safe. On top of that, they found a scary form of Vitamin A called retinyl palmitate found in 41% of sunscreens. Says EWG,
"The FDA is investigating whether this compound may accelerate skin damage and elevate skin cancer risk when applied to skin exposed to sunlight. FDA data suggest that vitamin A may be photocarcinogenic, meaning that in the presence of the sun’s ultraviolet rays, the compound and skin undergo complex biochemical changes resulting in cancer [...] In FDA’s one-year study, tumors and lesions developed up to 21 percent sooner in lab animals coated in a vitamin A-laced cream (at a concentration of 0.5%) than animals treated with a vitamin-free cream. Both groups were exposed to the equivalent of just nine minutes of maximum intensity sunlight each day. [...] The evidence against vitamin A is far from conclusive, but as long as it is suspect, EWG recommends that consumers choose vitamin A-free sunscreens".
I love the EWG. They work hard to keep us safe from toxins and chemicals. You can go to their website and search the sunscreen you use and they will tell you whether it is safe or not. They even have a list of EWG Sunscreens Hall of Shame, with brands like Aveeno, Banana Boat, and Coppertone for kids. Check it out and make sure yours is not on there!
Make sure the sunscreen has the following qualitites
- mineral sunscreen with zinc and titanium
